Each winter, thousands of humpback whales travel to Hawaiʻi's warm waters to breed, give birth, and care for their young. Join Illuminate Waikiki for a 90-minute whale-watching cruise along Oʻahu's south shore, where open-ocean views, the Waikīkī skyline, and Diamond Head create an unforgettable backdrop for one of nature's greatest migrations.
Departing from Kewalo Basin Harbor, our experienced captain and crew will search the waters beyond Waikīkī for signs of humpback activity. Watch for breaches, tail slaps, pectoral-fin waves, spouts, and the unforgettable moment a whale's fluke disappears beneath the surface.
Unlike a standard sightseeing boat, Illuminate is a custom-built, 45-passenger glass-bottom vessel designed to keep guests connected to the ocean throughout the cruise. Enjoy spacious viewing areas, comfortable seating, and multiple perspectives as we explore the waters off Honolulu.

During whale season (approximately Dec 15–Apr 15), we offer three Whale Watching tours every day:

Your experience begins at Illuminate Waikiki's check-in location at Kewalo Basin Harbor. After boarding, the crew will provide a brief safety orientation before the vessel heads toward the open waters off Waikīkī. The captain will follow current ocean conditions and reported whale activity to select the best available route. Guests are encouraged to scan the horizon for mist-like spouts, splashes, dorsal fins, and other signs of whales nearby. Humpbacks may be seen traveling alone, alongside a calf, or gathering in active groups. Between sightings, take in unobstructed views of the Waikīkī coastline and Diamond Head. The vessel's glass-bottom portal may also offer another perspective on the ocean below when water and visibility conditions allow. Because humpback whales are wild animals moving freely through their natural environment, their location and behavior cannot be predicted. Each departure is a genuine wildlife-search experience, and specific sightings are never guaranteed.
Illuminate Waikiki respects Hawaiʻi's marine environment and follows all applicable wildlife-viewing regulations. Our captain maintains required distances from humpback whales and allows the animals to determine the nature of every encounter. The crew never chases, feeds, touches, or intentionally disrupts marine wildlife. Responsible viewing helps protect the whales while giving guests the opportunity to observe their natural behavior.
Please arrive at the designated check-in location at least 30 minutes before departure. The vessel must leave on schedule, and late arrivals may not be able to join the cruise. Routes may change based on wind, waves, visibility, wildlife activity, and other operating conditions. Ocean movement should be expected, so guests who are prone to seasickness should take their preferred precautions before boarding. Children must remain supervised by an accompanying adult throughout the experience. Wildlife sightings, glass-bottom visibility, and specific whale behaviors are not guaranteed.
