How the Night Reef Walker Works

The Night Reef Walker is a 90-minute cruise aboard Illuminate that shows what wakes up when the sun goes down, with everyone staying aboard.

1. Check in at Kewalo Basin. Arrive 30 minutes before the 8:00 PM departure. Paid parking is available but limited.
2. Cruise toward the Waikīkī reef. Watch the city lights come on as Illuminate moves offshore.
3. Look through the illuminated portal. Our crew helps point out reef activity and marine life moving through the light below.
4. Return to Kewalo Basin. You're back at the harbor by 9:30 PM.

Why an 8:00 PM Departure Is After Sunset All Year

Honolulu's sunset moves by about an hour and a half across the year, and Hawaiʻi does not use daylight saving time.

According to US Naval Observatory data for Honolulu, the latest sunset of 2026 falls at 7:18 PM in the first week of July, with civil twilight ending at 7:42 PM. The earliest is 5:48 PM, from late November into early December.

That puts an 8:00 PM departure at least 42 minutes after sunset on the longest evenings of summer, and more than two hours after it in early December. Every departure leaves after sunset and after civil twilight has ended.

What Happens on a Hawaiian Reef After Dark

The reef changes after sunset, as we put it on our home page. Some reef animals take shelter and others come out to feed.

• ʻŪʻū (soldierfish) are "Bright red by day," congregate in caves and crevices during the day, and feed at night, according to the Division of Aquatic Resources' Fishes of Hawaii guide.
• ʻAlaʻihi (squirrelfish) gather in crevices by day and forage over the reef at night, and most species take on "prominent nocturnal coloration," per the same guide.
• Uhu (parrotfish) do the opposite. The Waikīkī Aquarium says that at night "they seek shelter among the rocks and coral of the reef," and that smaller individuals secrete a cocoon of mucus around their bodies.
• The undulated moray, common on Hawaiian reefs, is seen withdrawn in crevices by day or hunting in the open at night, according to the Waikīkī Aquarium's undulated moray page.
• Octopus split by species. The Waikīkī Aquarium explains that heʻe, the day octopus, rests in a den at night, while heʻe-mākoko, the night octopus, hunts at night and shelters by day.
• Most coral polyps feed at night, according to NOAA's coral guide.

None of that is a promise of what will appear under Illuminate on a given night. Visibility, weather and ocean conditions change, and nature decides what swims through the light.

What to Bring and When to Arrive

For the evening, the cruise page recommends a light jacket or sweater, comfortable clothing and footwear, a camera or phone, and a reusable water bottle.

Plan to reach Kewalo Basin Harbor 30 minutes before departure, which means 7:30 PM. Paid parking is available at the harbor but limited, so allow time to find a space.

Who Can Go on the Night Reef Walker

The Night Reef Walker is a no-swim cruise, and it carries the general participation requirements that apply to every Illuminate cruise. Please read them before booking:

• Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by a participating adult at all times.
• Guests must be able to safely climb a boat ladder without assistance.
• Participants should be in good physical and mental health and have full mobility.
• This vessel and experience may not be suitable for guests with limited mobility.
• For safety reasons, pregnant guests and individuals with ongoing back or neck conditions may not participate.
• This experience is not recommended for guests age 75 or older or those weighing more than 300 pounds.
• Guests with heart conditions, high blood pressure, severe asthma, or other serious medical concerns should not participate.
• Guests must be able to understand and communicate important safety instructions in English.
