Glass Floor or Catamaran Deck, Which Waikīkī Cruise Format Actually Shows You the Reef in 2026

If looking at the water beneath you is the reason for your cruise, book a glass-bottom boat. If you want sails, wind on the bow nets, an included open bar or a snorkel stop, book a sailing catamaran.

At Illuminate Waikīkī, our Glass Bottom Boat Sunset & After Dark Reef Walker Cruise leaves Kewalo Basin Harbor at 6:00 PM, and you watch the water below through a glass-bottom portal with no swimming. On any boat, how much of the reef you see depends on water clarity, which changes from day to day.

We run our cruises aboard Illuminate, a purpose-built, 45-passenger glass-bottom vessel based at Kewalo Basin Harbor in Honolulu. Illuminate carries a 20,000-lumen underwater lighting system, and its glass-bottom portal is true glass.

Key Takeaways

  • Illuminate Waikīkī's glass bottom boat shows the water below without anyone swimming.
  • Holokai and Maitaʻi catamarans offer sails, bow nets and an included open bar.
  • Our Sunset & After Dark Reef Walker Cruise runs 6:00 to 7:30 PM, from $89 for adults.
  • Water clarity changes day to day on both formats, and nature decides what appears.

What a Glass-Bottom Boat Shows You

A glass-bottom boat has a viewing window in its hull. You look down from the deck at the sand, coral and water under the boat, and nobody has to get wet.

Looking straight down into a glass-bottom boat's viewing well, with a metal ladder at the top and rectangular glass panes showing coral, sand and a sea turtle in the water below

Our Morning Coffee Cruise leaves at 7:30 AM with Aliʻi Coffee Co. coffee and pastries aboard and time at the glass-bottom viewing area.

On the Sunset & After Dark Reef Walker Cruise and the Glass Bottom Boat Fireworks & After Dark Reef Walker Cruise, Illuminate's 20,000-lumen lighting reveals the reef after dark while you stay aboard.

Guests may see Hawaiian green sea turtles, tropical reef fish, monk seals, and other marine life. Marine life, reef visibility, weather and ocean conditions vary, and nature decides what appears.

Hawaii Glass Bottom Boats also runs glass-bottom cruises from Kewalo Basin Harbor, at lower adult starting rates. Its tours page lists a one-hour daytime cruise from $40 and a 1.5-hour sunset cruise from $60, both for all ages.

Its sunset cruise page describes fish "curiously drawn toward our boat’s lights illuminating the water around the glass."

What a Catamaran Deck Gives You

Holokai and Maitaʻi both board sailing catamarans from the sand of Waikīkī Beach, sail along the coastline, carry a bar and have nets at the bow.

Holokai checks in at the Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach Resort, 2169 Kālia Rd. Its about page says the catamaran was custom designed and built in 2015, carries up to 49 passengers and has a restroom aboard.

Holokai's Sunset Cruise runs 1.5 hours from $80 for guests 13 and over, from $45 for keiki 4 to 12, and free for infants 0 to 3. The ticket includes an open bar of beer, wine, champagne, hard seltzers and the house "Holokai Hooch."

Friday sunset sails on Holokai are for adults 21 and over. Its home page says outside alcohol is prohibited aboard, and kamaʻāina and military rates are available by phone.

Holokai also runs a Turtle Canyon Snorkel, a 2.5-hour trip split between a snorkel and a sail, from $80 for guests 4 and over.

Maitaʻi Catamaran checks in on the beach behind the Sheraton Waikiki and Halekulani hotels. Its Sunset Mai Tai Sail leaves at 5:00 PM, varying with the season, and runs about 90 minutes.

That sail starts at $79 for adults and teens and $40 for children 4 to 12, and children 3 and under ride free. The open bar includes Mai Tais, beer, wine, champagne, juices and soft drinks, and tax is included in the listed prices.

Maitaʻi's sailings page says boarding is barefoot and guests may get splashed while boarding or sailing, and it lists no snorkel tour. Its about page says outside drinks are not allowed aboard.

Neither catamaran's pages describe a glass bottom or an underwater viewing area. Holokai says most hotels on the strip are within a 10-minute walk of its check-in.

BYOB is welcome on our two evening cruises, per our FAQ.

Where the Two Formats Overlap

A catamaran hull can carry a glass bottom. Hawaii Glass Bottom Boats describes its Haleiwa Queen as "a 50-foot power catamaran with glass viewing ports on the bottom" in its FAQ.

The same FAQ says guests do not swim on its regular public cruises, and a private charter can add a swim stop. It also welcomes guests to bring their own food and drinks, including adult beverages.

Our Turtle Reef Snorkel visits a known honu hangout, with in-water guides and fitted gear, twice a day for 2 hours, from $89 for adults.

Its published requirements say "All guests must be confident swimmers and able to swim without additional flotation assistance" and "Previous snorkeling experience is required."

The same page says "Non-swimmers may not participate in this tour" and "Guests with recurring shoulder problems may not participate." The Morning Coffee, Sunset and Friday Fireworks cruises ask no one to swim.

Before You Book an Illuminate Waikīkī Cruise

These general participation requirements apply to each of our cruises:

Choosing Between a Glass Floor and a Catamaran Deck

A catamaran deck gives you the sail, the nets and the bar, and a glass-bottom portal gives you the water under the boat, lit by 20,000 lumens after dark on Illuminate.

Our Sunset & After Dark Reef Walker Cruise runs 6:00 to 7:30 PM from Kewalo Basin Harbor, from $89 for adults and $79 for children, infants in a carrier and kamaʻāina.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a glass bottom boat or a catamaran cruise better in Waikīkī?

A glass bottom boat is the better choice in Waikīkī if you want to see the water beneath you without swimming, and a sailing catamaran is better for sails, bow nets and an open bar. Illuminate Waikīkī runs glass-bottom cruises from Kewalo Basin Harbor aboard Illuminate. Water clarity varies on both formats, so neither can promise how much reef you see.

Can you see the reef from a catamaran in Waikīkī?

On the Holokai and Maitaʻi sailing catamarans in Waikīkī, neither operator's pages describe an underwater viewing area, so the reef view comes from snorkeling. Holokai's Turtle Canyon Snorkel adds a swim with a guide. Illuminate Waikīkī guests look down through a purpose-built glass-bottom portal instead, and conditions and marine life vary.

Do you need to swim on an Illuminate Waikīkī cruise?

No swimming is needed on the Illuminate Waikīkī Morning Coffee Cruise, the Sunset & After Dark Reef Walker Cruise or the Fireworks & After Dark Reef Walker Cruise. Guests stay aboard and look through the glass-bottom portal. The Turtle Reef Snorkel is the swim option, and it requires confident swimmers with previous snorkeling experience.

Which is cheaper, a glass bottom boat or a catamaran cruise in Waikīkī?

A glass bottom boat can be the cheaper sunset option in Waikīkī. Hawaii Glass Bottom Boats' sunset cruise starts from $60, against $79 for Maitaʻi's sunset sail and $80 for Holokai's, both with the bar included, as published in September 2026. Illuminate Waikīkī's Sunset & After Dark Reef Walker Cruise starts from $89 for adults and $79 for children, infants in a carrier and kamaʻāina.

Can you bring your own drinks on a Waikīkī sunset cruise?

You can bring your own drinks on some Waikīkī sunset cruises. BYOB is welcome on the Illuminate Waikīkī Sunset & After Dark Reef Walker Cruise and Fireworks & After Dark Reef Walker Cruise, and Hawaii Glass Bottom Boats welcomes adult beverages too. Holokai and Maitaʻi include an open bar and do not allow outside alcohol aboard.
